What others say about Sean O'Boyle

“The wonderful soundscape that Sean O’Boyle achieves in his percussion concerto ‘Portraits of Immortal Love’ constantly evolves into emotional sound stories depicting the power of love of all those involved in World War One. Although this piece is a percussion concerto the composer writes beautifully for the orchestra allowing everything and everyone to shine thus creating air and balance in his music. The writing for percussion has great balance between exciting virtuosity and sheer beauty. This will certainly be a piece that will capture the imagination of performers and audiences alike.”

A jazz-clarinet playing, orchestra conductor, Sean O’Boyle also happens to be THE most prolific musician in Australia.

His recording for the ABC — a concerto for didgeridoo — which he wrote and conducted with the Queensland Orchestra, is his 108th album. Sean O’Boyle is second only to the great Slim Dusty in musical output.

Legends like James Morrison, Tommy Emmanuel and Kate Ceberano sing his praises, as uniquely-talented.

"Just occasionally as an orchestra General Manager you get to surprise your players. The looks of astonishment, delight and enjoyment that were etched on the faces of the members of the BBC Concert Orchestra when they encountered James Morrison for the first time in June 2007 provided me with such a moment. From his pyrotechnic opening trumpet salvo in rehearsal, through to consummate musicianship, humour and energy in performance -James is someone we all want to work with again.........and again.

With conducting and arrangements under the total control of Sean O'Boyle, stylish vocals from Emma Pask and an Aussie rhythm section you want take with you everywhere - this was a collaboration that will live long in the memory - for all the right reasons.

I very much hope the BBC CO can repeat James's Symphonic Swing programme in concert and capture those results in the studio. Star quality and music making this good, needs to be heard and available to all."

If a musician is very talented it’s sometimes said that he or she is “comfortable” in a number of styles. Sean O’Boyle is that rare musician who seems to be not only comfortable but genuinely creative, innovative and simply brilliant at whatever style you care to name. His understanding of jazz, the symphony orchestra and his sheer musicality, make him a voice on the Australian music scene not to be missed.
